Cord Care
The umbilical cord requires care for up to 3 weeks after birth. If it is kept dry, especially at the base (use a Q‑tip dipped in alcohol 2 to 3 times a day) the cord should fall off within this time. The baby's diaper should be adjusted so that it does not irritate the bellybutton. The Q‑tip treatment should be done 2 to 3 times a day. Do not be afraid to lift it gently to clean it well. It does not hurt the baby.
Occasionally, you will see a small discharge of blood from the cord. This is nothing to worry about, but if you should notice an unusual odor, swelling, redness, or firmness near the cord, contact the office at once.
